The Sterimatic Needle Protector and cleaning systems

  • Reduces needle-stick injuries
  • Protects the needle from damage
  • Reduces infection & abscessing
  • Reduces cross-contamination of disease
cox syringe
To mass vaccinate livestock it is common practice to use multi-dose syringes and to re-use needles. These syringes work very well however needle re-use can result in;

  • Abscesses and infection at the injection site
  • Disease transmission
  • Needle-stick injuries to the farmer or vet.

Ideally a new, sterile needle should be used for every injection, however where this does not occur there is an alternative that reduces these risks;

The Sterimatic System

Sterimatic has systems for Multi dose and Single dose applications

1)         Sterimatic for Multi-dose applications
It is a unique system that can be fitted onto standard multi-dose syringes.
In addition to a standard syringe and needle you need 2 extra items;

A retractable Sterimatic sleeve fits onto the syringe, protecting the needle and also reducing needle-stick and scratch injuries.

A Stericap which contains a foam insert soaked in disinfectant, fits into the sleeve. This cleans and disinfects the needle automatically between every injection.

Here’s how it works
After attaching the sleeve & Stericap to the syringe you inject as normal.

As the Stericap is pushed against the skin the sleeve automatically retracts. The needle is cleaned as it passes through into the animal.
The dose can then be delivered as normal.

Then as the needle is withdrawn the sleeve automatically extends and the needle is cleaned for a second time and then covered and protected.

Use each Stericap for up to 100 injections within 3 days of opening

The Sterimatic system has been used world-wide for 25+ years in most animal sectors
(Sheep, Pigs, Cattle, Poultry, Rabbits etc..). It is used by Governments, Vets and farmers as well as use by Veterinary Pharmaceutical companies such as CEVA, Elanco, MSD Animal Health, Pfizer, Virbac etc.

Benefits to the user:

  • Safety – Due to a reduction in needle stick & scratch injuries.
  • Financial - Due to Healthier Livestock; less infections, abscesses & lower mortality rates.
  • Confidence - due to better & safer injection methods.
Benefits to Livestock:

  • Reduced cross infection of disease between livestock.
  • Reduced bacterial infection at the injection site (Reducing Abscessing)
  • Healthier Livestock.

What injection depths are available?

There are 3 sleeves to enable different injection depths, (clear, green & blue).

  • 2mm for TB testing. Use modified Mclintock syringe with clear sleeve.
  • 12mm (½”) injection depth. Use Clear sleeve with a 25mm (1”) needle. (6mm is possible using a collar)
  • 22 mm (1”) injection depth. Use Green sleeve with a 37 mm (1 ½”) needle.
  • 37 mm (1 ½”) injection depth. Use Blue sleeve with a 72 mm (3”) needle.

Recommended use for both systems is in accordance with Data-file:

  • Stericap:  Large animals use up to 100 injections or up to 3 days from opening.

                 Poultry use up-to 500 injections within 12 hours from opening.

  • Sterimatic Sleeve: Changed / cleaned at least daily.
  • Syringes and draw off tubes: Changed / cleaned at least daily.

Where are the systems used?

World-wide in a variety of animal sectors. (Sheep, Pigs, Cattle, Rabbits, Poultry, etc..).

Data-file

The Sterimatic system has been extensively tested by independent laboratories.
The Stericap has proven to be effective against many Viral and Bacterial contaminants Including; Foot & Mouth Disease, PRRSV, Leukosis, Bluetongue, Staphylococcus, E-coli and others.
Any usage of the system outside of the data-file recommendations is the full responsibility of the company or persons concerned.

Live vaccines
The Stericap cleans the outside of the needle and the flow of vaccine keeps the inside clean. Because the main dose of injectable does not contact the Stericap there should be no overall effect on the vaccine. The small amount of biocide on the needle is wiped off onto the outer skin as the needle is inserted into the animal.
This is confirmed by several tests in the data-file (IBR, BVD & CAV live vaccines) and should apply to all vaccines, however Sterimatic cannot guarantee untested product.

Biocide disinfectant in Stericap.
The Stericap contains a foam insert soaked in a mixture of 2.5% Glutaraldehyde & 5% Bardac 22. This biocide complies with EU regulations and is classed as Harmful.
Care should be taken to avoid contact with Skin & eyes. If there is contact, wash thoroughly in water and consult a doctor if irritation persists.
Dispose of all items in accordance with local regulations.
